Split Cylinder Resonator - Sample thickness does not affect measurement values (40 GHz, PP)

Overview

We sometimes receive questions about whether the dielectric constant measurement values will differ if the sample thickness differs greatly even for the same material. We reply as follows: In the case of the EM Labs split cylinder, the same results can be obtained for both thin and thick samples if the material characteristics are the same. To demonstrate this, we compared the results of measuring 10 samples cut from a large 20µm film, one at a time, with the results of measuring the samples stacked on top of each other. If the material is the same, there is no significant difference in the measured permittivity values, whether the sample is 20µm or 200µm thick. If samples of "the same material" with different thicknesses give different DkDf results, then they are expected to be different materials.
